Skincare in Lockdown

Hey you beautiful people! Last time I checked in with you all, we discussed my 5 quarantine skincare products that were helping me during lockdown. As I mentioned in that post, I was wearing no makeup, had more time on my hands and therefore a chance to really get to grips with what my skin was needing on a daily basis.

As someone who suffers with dry & sensitive, eczema prone skin, there’s been a lot of trial and testing products over the years where I have to be careful that I’m not using anything that will aggravate the skin on both my face and body! Lock down has made everyone take a step back, made us REALLY slow down and rethink perhaps our busy lifestyles and the choices that we make, which I think has been essential for me for my health, well being and primarily my skin.

In this post, I’ll be talking about beauty & skincare (as always) and going through a few little favourites of mine – some have taken longer to form an opinion of than others and because sometimes, things take a couple of weeks to actually make a difference to your skin!

time to cleanse

First up, lets talk about cleansers. I have quite the collection of cleansers now as I’ve really researched into the benefits of cleansing, double cleansing and the different types of cleansers that are good for your skin type. My go to cleanser of a morning & then for a 2nd cleanse at night has been the Dr Barbara Sturm Foaming Cleanser (£45). This was actually a little quarantine gift off my boyfriend as I’d finished the tester set I got off him at Christmas! I’m really surprised at how much I’m enjoying this cleanser seeing as foam cleansers are predominately not good for those with dry skin types as they’re said to be quite drying and can strip the skin. However, with constant use over the past 3/4 months I can honestly say I find it so great on my skin. My eczema flare ups on my face are always around my eyes and my mouth, and I’ve found with using this, that the flare ups are a LOT less aggressive than they used to be. You can find Dr Barbara Sturm products on Cult Beauty!

TOP TIP: Make sure you’re cleansing your face for AT LEAST a minute. Only then does the product really start to work into your skin and give it all the goodness and you’ll start to see massive differences in the effectiveness of your skincare! It’s really important that you give yourself time in the morning and in the night to have a little pamper – it’s such great self care and you’ll feel so much better for doing it.

time to tighten & tone

After cleansing, we tone. A toner has been in my skincare routine for years with my ALL time OG product being Pixi Glow Tonic. As a glycolic acid, it instantly sheds dead skin cells on your face and you see a difference IMMEDIATELY after using it – your skin is a lot brighter and tighter! However, over the past month I’ve been using the Pixi Milky Tonic (100ml, £10) with ingredients such as jojoba oil & oat extracts which are really soothing and nourishing for the skin, something that my skin has really needed recently. I bought my Pixi on Look Fantastic but Pixi, Cult Beauty, Boot, Asos all stock it too!

TOP TIP: A toner will help close your pores after your cleanse and is great to help restore your skins PH balance and add some extra moisture before you go onto your other skincare steps.

time to refresh

My next favourite addition to my skincare has been the Heritage Store Rose Petals Rosewater (Amazon, £7). Previous to this, I had been using the Mario Badescu rose spray and I do find them to be so beneficial to my skin – it’s perfect to freshen up my skin, give it a boost of moisture and most of all, it’s become an essential part of my skincare as I use it alongside my new favourite hyaluronic acid. As well as being great for skin, it’s such a mood booster and I find myself constantly reaching for it to spray over my whole body!

time to soothe

By this I mean…eye cream. I was 26 years of age when I realised the impact and importance of an eye cream which to some people may not be groundbreaking but to me it’s been a radical change and improvement in my daily skincare routine! The skin around your eyes are so thin and sensitive so it’s important to make sure you’re using the right products so that you don’t aggravate the skin. God only knows the trouble I have with dark circles and also very sore and dry, eczema prone eye lids and underneath. After some research, trial and testing (I’ve tried everything from Superdrugs own to Charlotte Tilbury), the eye cream that does it for me is the Eau Thermale Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream (Amazon £9). For eye cream, you only need a little amount but this is so moisturising and soothing I feel silly not trying it sooner. Whilst not solving all my eczema problems, it massively reduces the amount of dryness I’ll experience during my flare ups. With my skin being more moisturised around the eye area with a cream that’s actually designed for them, I’ve noticed ever so slightly how my dark circles have become a little brighter. (However, I must point out that as much as I wish, eye creams won’t solve dark circles – I need to DRINK MORE WATER & I need to heavily reduce my caffeine intake!)

Top Tip: A good eye cream will help with better application of your makeup too, especially your concealer, and will reduce creasing because your eye area is nice and moisturised.

time to nourish

Let’s talk about face masks. I love all sorts of face masks – I love sheet masks, I love peel off masks, I love cream masks, I love clay masks, I love sleep masks. I LOVE MASKS. They’re a great chance to step up your skincare and a great chance for a mid week treat and a little bit of me time. Over the past couple of months, I’ve really been loving the Elemis Superfood Vital Veggie Mask. (Elemis £28) I spoke about this very briefly in my previous quarantine skincare post as I had tried a sample and fell in love with it. Pretty soon after, I received a little love package off my gorgeous sister in law with the full sized version. Which I cried at because of how thoughtful it was. I love this mask and I’ll say again how impressed I am with the Superfood range from Elemis. It’s a nourishing pre-biotic green mask which really helps to support and care for the skins natural moisture barrier. It’s such a gorgeous consistency on your skin and a real quick 10 minute pick me up but one that has amazing results – glowing, soft skin.

Hope you enjoyed this quick run through of products I’m currently loving. Let me know if any are your favourites too or if you purchase any!

Love Kate X
